The Registration Insolvency and Trusteeship Agency, (RITA) is a semi-autonomous Agency responsible for among other things in managing the information on key life events which are births, deaths, marriages, divorces and adoptions; for achieving justice, peace and security of the Nation

In registration of Marriages and Divorce, RITA maintains the register of all the marriages annulments and Divorce that occurs in the country and also maintains a foreign register of marriages and divorces for Tanzanians whose marriages or divorces occurred outside the country.

Registration of Marriage and Divorces is governed by the Law of Marriage Act CAP 29 R.E 2019.  In order to get our service online the applicant is required to register and log into our website  www.rita.go.tz and command  eRITA button then select on marriage and divorce services and below the marriage and divorce services the applicant will click/command the button written Click here to obtain service.

 

Below is how to apply for different services

1.     Application for Certificate of no impediment

It is document issued by the office of the Registrar General of Marriages confirming that a citizen of the United Republic Tanzania has no existing marriage record and therefore qualifies to get married outside the country

General Requirements for application of certificate of no impediment:

• Applicant Birth Certificates and passport,
• Verification letter from parent/guardian,
• Parent/guardian identity card
• Passport/identity of the intending partner

 

How the application is done

• An applicant make online application by filling online application form (RGM12), submit the application online, system generate the bill and make payment.
• Applicants will be notified through their account whether their applications have been accepted or rejected. They may also track their application status through the online system.
• For the accepted application, control number of TZS 300,000/= will be displayed for payment
• Once the certificate is ready the applicant will be notified through the system

 

2.     Application for license to celebrate marriage.

License to conduct marriage is issued by the Registrar General to minister of religion which qualifies him/her to cerebrate marriage. Registrar General may cancel any license at any time by notice published in the Government Gazette.   

How to obtain license

• The applicant is required to fill an online application form (RGMF 2) with supporting documents
  • national identity card or
  • voters id or
  • passport and
  • pass size photograph)

• The application will be sent to his/her Religious Institution Representative for approval. Therefore they must be registered in the system by RITA administrators first.
• For the accepted application, control number of TZS 60,000/= will be displayed for payment.
• Once the license is ready the applicant will be notified through the system.

 

3.     Registrar General Special license Permit

The Registrar General may dispense with notice requirement under the Law of Marriage Act where there is sufficient reason to do so supported by requisite documents.

How the application is done:-

• The applicant make online application with supporting document as evidence on the reasons as to why the Registrar General should waive 21 days’ notice of intention to marry.
• The application can be accepted or rejected.
• For the accepted application, control number of TZS 200,000/= will be displayed for payment
• Once the permit is ready the applicant will be notified through the system

4.     Application of permit to celebrate marriage in special places

Registrar General may issue a license to the parties to celebrate marriage in special place other than habitually used as a place of public worship or gathering upon the application of intended partner.

How the application is done:-

• The applicant is required to make application online through eRITA and proceed to fill the form and attach supporting documents. Applicant must specify the locality place he intended to contract his/her marriage and send the application form online with supporting document. The applicant will be required to make the payments
• For the accepted application, control number of TZS 200,000/= will be displayed for payment
• Once the permit is ready the applicant will be notified through the system

5.     Application of single status certificate

It is a document issued by the office of the Registrar General of Marriages confirming that a citizen of the United Republic Tanzania is single.

How the application is done

• An applicant make online application by filling online application form (RGM12), submit the application online, system generate the bill and make payment.
• Applicants will be notified through their account whether their applications have been accepted or rejected.
• For the accepted application, control number of TZS 200,000/= will be displayed for payment
• Once the certificate is ready the applicant will be notified through the system

 

6.     Registration of foreign marriage

Registrar General has a mandate to register a foreign marriage.

 

How the application is done

• An applicant is required to register and make online application through our website www.rita.go.tz. Precondition for registration is either party to be a citizen of Tanzania. The supporting documents;-
  • Marriage certificate verified by the embassy of the foreign country
  • Passport of couple
  • Submitted documents must be written in English

• For the accepted application, control number of TZS 200,000/= will be displayed for payment
• Once the certificate is ready the applicant will be notified through the system

7.     Registration of Divorce

RITA is mandated to register and issue a divorce certificate.  

General Requirements for application of divorce certificate:

• Judgement/annulment
• Decree when the right to appeal is no longer available
• Marriage certificate,

How the application is done

• The applicant is required to make application online on website www.rita.go.tz and upload the documents required on the system.
• Applicants will be notified through their account whether their applications have been accepted
• For the accepted application, control number of TZS 40,000/= will be displayed for payment
• Once the divorce certificate is ready the applicant will be notified through the system

 

8.     Registration of foreign Divorce  

Divorce issued from a court of competent jurisdiction in a foreign country can be registered in Tanzania

General Requirements for application of divorce certificate:

• Judgement/annulment
• Decree absolute in english version when it is in other language and to be verified by embassy/consular of that country. 
• Marriage certificate

How the application is done

• The applicant is required to make application online on website www.rita.go.tz and upload the documents required.
• Applicants must be specify the court of that country issued divorce paper.
• For the accepted application, control number of TZS 200,000/= will be displayed for payment
• Once the divorce certificate is ready the applicant will be notified through the system
